El Cortez Hotel & Casino has opened its first-ever high-limit room as part of its $25 million remodel. The room has two high-limit blackjack tables and three high-limit slot machines, including Aristocrat’s Dragon Cash and two Ainsworth Super Charged 7s, with the maximum limit in the high-limit room being $2,000.

General manager Adam Wiesberg says business is strong again in gaming and in the property’s restaurants and bars. El Cortez shut down in March 2020 and stayed closed for nearly three months because of Covid restrictions. Management used that downtime to redesign its interior and implement new distancing and cleaning protocols, and many of those efforts are still in place.

The goals of the renovation were to preserve the property’s old-school charm and elevate the customer experience, general manager Adam Wiesberg said.

On Nov. 7, 1941, one month before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the 58-room El Cortez opened on Sixth Street and Fremont Avenue in Las Vegas, the first hotel-casino in the downtown area. Now grown to 364 rooms and the longest continuously operating casino in Las Vegas, El Cortez is undergoing an ambitious $21 million room renovation. Remodeling of the remaining 60-plus rooms in its 15-story tower is expected to begin in April.
